George Csato (1910-1983) - ‘Composition abstraite’.

Size: 76 x 46 cm.

In very good condition.
Shipped via Colissimo.

Georges Csato was born in Hungary, in Budapest, on February 10, 1910 and studied at the fine arts school of Vienna, then from 1930 to 1934 in Berlin where he was taught by Archipenko, Käthe Kollwitz and Karl Hofer. There, he also met Paul Klee and Lionel Feininger who advised him. From 1936 to 1938 he lived in Prague and was friend with Kokoschka, who had fled Nazi Germany.

During the war he was taken prisoner by the Russians and survived by painting portraits of his captors. Back in Hungary, he exhibited in Budapest in 1946 and 1948.

In the same year, 1948, Cocteau helps him to organise his first exhibition in Paris and urges him to settle there.
An excellent portraitist, Csato will paint the biggest celebrities of the 1950s, from Colette to Einstein, from Rachmaninoff to Bertrand Russell.

However, having been deeply marked by the influence of Klee and Feininger, it is in abstraction that he finds his main inspiration, he produces abstract works of high purity with an innate sense of harmony, in reaction to the horrors he experienced during the second world war.
He goes from the geometric abstraction of concrete art to a colourful lifestyle and feminine curves, while continuing portraying his famous friends.

He participates in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1955 and the Salon Comparaisons in 1957.
He teaches a few years in Canada and is naturalised French citizen in 1976. He dies in Paris in 1983.

His painting explores sensuality and develops refined grey harmonies in the fifties, violent contrasts between black and red, yellow and green in the 1970s.
