Beautifully executed bronze sculpture of the 'Diana de Gabies' after antique example - Réduction Sauvage - dated 1886

19th century bronze sculpture of the ‘Diana de Gabies’ after antique example. Diana was the goddess of the hunt, moon and nature (similar to the Greek goddess Artemis). The inscription on the side of the base 'R.tion Sauvage' refers to 'Réduction Sauvage', a technique of the inventor Frederic Sauvage (1786-1857), with which sculptures of large size could be downsized (he had received a patent for this in 1836). On the front of the base is an inscription which appears to indicate that the sculpture was a gift in 1886. The sculpture is in very good condition. Height 44 cm. Width of the base is 14.5 cm, and the depth of the base is 12 cm. Weight 5.8 kg.
