Mask of the WE (Ngere) - Ivory Coast
Materials: wood, raffia, shells, cotton
Dimensions, h x w: 40 x 33 cm
Weight approx.: 2 kilos (2,100 g)
This type of mask, also referred to as 'Gre' or 'Nyabwa', was worn by the Ngere (also known as Guéré or Wé) in the southwest of the Ivory Coast at war dances, and when judgements were pronounced.
This mask is a typical example of the Ngere style: carved from light brown wood, it is an aggressive-dynamic and powerful composition of human and animal features.
