In good state. Second quarter of the 20th century

Provenance: collected by P. Westerdijk in Lomé, Togo around 1980 from Ibrahim Moussa.

Apart from the far more common Ibedji carved for use within the family setting by members of the society who had lost one of two siblings of twins so as to treat these wooden replacements as living beings, the Yoruba also have made, be it in very small numbers only, pairs of especially large pairs to be placed on family altars. What we have here is such a kingsize representation of a standard pair of Ibedji but here with very special dimensions. Why such extra-large examples exist is far from clear. As far as we know, the literature is not clear on this. The most likely explanation would be that we are dealing here with the Orisha of Ibedji i.e. the god of twins. Ordered on the advice of a diviner it would mean that a family would like to placate this Orisha by installing and worshipping such a special pair on a special altar so as to spare the family for potentially more dangerous arrivals of twin births that had occurred previously.

Literature: Fausto Polo and Jean David; Ibedji, Missaglia, 2001, figs. 100 ff.

Dimensions: 42 x 13 x 14 cm.
Tribe / Region: Yoruba of S.W. Nigeria. The Yoruba Egbado live on the border with the Republic of Benin.
Material: hard wood.
Weight: 0.863 kg / 0.916 kg.

First time shipping to Switzerland. I didn't know that three copies of an invoice had to be pasted on the box, such as international shipping. This was the reason for returning to the sender. I am very sorry for this delay
