Mechanical - 8-day movement - full and half hour bell striking and repetitive strike
flower Comtoise with a beautiful patina, signed 'Qualité Superieur Esné à St.Lo', manufactured in France, mid-1890.
The name Comtoise is derived from the geographical name Franche-Comté (literally: free county), an area composed of the French departments of Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saône and the Belfort region.
In addition to Comtoise clocks, they are also known as Morbier clocks (for the town in the Jura where, or so the story goes, the first clock of this type was made by a blacksmith named Mayet). They are also known as Morez clocks, for the small French town near Morbier that is just 20 km from the Swiss border and became a transportation hub for the burgeoning clock trade. And because Franche-Comté overlapped with the former county of Burgundy in the east, these clocks are also called Burgundian clocks.
