Important and beautiful sculpture that represents a victorious David who sheaths back his sword after killing Goliath, whose head lies on the ground under the foot of David, sculpted by the French master Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) . David Vainqueur, also known as David After the Combat, won for Mercie a First Class Medal, and the Croix of the Legion of Honor, making him the only artist who received it while still being a student. The French state commissioned it and exhibited it at the World Exposition of 1873. in memory of the heroic resistance of the city against the Prussian invader during the siege of 1870.
