The name Dino holds a special place in Ferrari's history. It is first of all the name of Enzo Ferrari's revered son, who died tragically before he was able to demonstrate his talent. It later became the name of an engine and then that of a brand shared between Fiat and Ferrari. For the average person, the name Dino is that of the famous little 206/246 GT saloon with sculptural lines, produced from 1969 to 1974.
Jean-Pierre Gabriel does not ignore any of the dimensions of this legendary name in his book. He looks back at the role of Dino Ferrari, the agreements with Fiat and the origins of the Fiat Dino, the Turinese equivalent of the famous 206/246 GT. However, the common thread of his work remains the "little Ferrari" project, which we discover was not born as a result of the agreements signed with Fiat in 1965, to Henry Ford II's great dismay.
Jean-Pierre Gabriel, thanks to the many testimonies and documents he has collected, retraces a history whose beginnings date back to the mid-1950s. Throughout the pages, a long maturation process is revealed. This book will introduce some of the lesser-known models, including the small ASAs, 4-cylinder saloons designed by Ferrari, but also the Innocenti 186 GT, a stillborn project that would lead to the launch of the Fiat Dino.
These historical pages alone would already have been enough to produce an excellent book. But the author did not stop there. He also details the design of the V6 2.0 and 2.4, as well as the origins of the Fiat and Dino designs, along with supporting testimonials from engineers and coachbuilders. The evolution of the model, its cross-production process between Pininfarina, Fiat and Ferrari and its evolution are described in detail. The V6's racing destiny, the end of the Dino brand and its descendants are, of course, not forgotten.
Beyond the invaluable testimonies of those who were part of the Dino adventure, the book benefits from a very rich iconography, equal to a well written and precise text. We will merely regret the presence of too many shells.
This book is one of the "bibles" that enthusiasts recommend to one another long after their publication.
