1922, France

Very exclusive 1e production Gras lamp. In 1921, engineer Bernard-Albin Gras created a series of lamps for industrial and design offices. The ergonomics and simplicity of the mechanics, without screws or welding, give it a robustness and almost immediate success in all markets. Bernard-Albin Grass is considered to be one of the first designers of the twentieth century. In 1922, Didier Des Ganchons modified the lamp's connecting rod to integrate the wire. It now takes care of the production and marketing of the brand. In 1927, Didier Des Ganchons came to André-René Ravel to take over the patent. The name of the lamp then changes to "Lamp Ravel Clamart" and its production lasted until 1970. In this version is marked "Lamp R.A.V.E.L Clamart". This lamp is a recognized icon of French industrial design, praised by leading architects, including Le Corbusier, Mallet-Stevens, Eileen Gray or the painters Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse, etc ... This lamp has a timeless design. Its perfectly functional appearance and strictly formal humility, gives an impression of aesthetic neutrality.

How to estimate the age and value of a GRAS lamp?

From 1922 to 1930 the connecting rod is designated "Lamp Adjustable GRAS Brevée S.G.D.G". From 1930 to 1932, "Lampe Ajustable D.G.R" and after 1932 "Lampe R.A.V.E.L Clamart." This Model 201 of 1922 with lamp cap model 1055 15 x 20 cm in aluminum is a original of 1922 with very clear indication "Lamp Adjustable GRAS Brevée S.G.D.G". Very often, the inscriptions have disappeared over the years or are no longer readily cleared by removing paint layers or shading the lamps while restoring. That means that they are still very decorative, but have lost much of their value due to the lack of a caption. As you can see in the pictures, this lamp is in perfect condition, including a very clear inscription that it is a light of the first production from the hand of Bernard-Albin Gras. This also means that this is a very exclusive and almost untouchable original with a very high value. The total hight unfold is 100 cm. The deflector is mirror polished so it looks like new and even the fitting is original! If you want an exclusive original GRAS in your collection, this is the ideal moment. Rarely this lamps are offered from the original first production. These first productions with such a clear inscription are only offered in special stores for prices between 1500€ and 2600 €.
