A painting of the market of the city of Woudrichem in the 19th century. Woudrichem is an old fortified Dutch city at the Merwede river in the province of Noord-Brabant. The painting by Jan Jasper has a lot of similarities with a work by Jan Weissenbruch (1822-1880) of the market in Woudrichem. The painting by Weissenbruch is pictured in the blue lexicon by Pieter A. Scheen (revised version 1981) - Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1880, photo number 125.

The condition of painting and frame:
The painting is in very good condition. The painting is undamaged, has not been restored and is without crackle. The canvas has no dirt on its surface and the linen is well stretched.
The frame is in excellent condition and has hardly any visible signs of use. The KWH frame (top brand) is artisanal made.

The Dutch painter Jan Jasper is born on 11 May 1937 in The Hague. He passed away on 18 February 2018 in The Hague. His full name is Jan Hendrik Jacob Jasper. He became a sailor at the age of 17. Jan was educated at the The National Art School in Sydney (Australia) during 1956 and 1957. Jan was a student of F.T.H. van Gaalen (1904-1990) from 1958 through and of painter A.N.M. Karssen (1945).

Jan lived and worked in The Hague. Besides a studio, he also had a gallery at Laan van Meerdervoort 249. He moved to Rijswijk, and after that in 1992 to Turnhout en Hoogstraten (Belgium), to subsequently later return to The Hague again.
Jan Jasper predominantly made paintings of old Dutch beach views and sea views of Scheveningen, in the style of the ‘Hollandse Romantische School’ from the 19th century. Besides that, he painted city views, landscapes, animals and the Port of Rotterdam.
Jan used aliases besides his own name: Zielstra (ca. 1960-1965), Douwes (ca. 1970-1982), Mooyman, (ca. 1984-1986), Hendrik Vader (ca. 1992-1997) Seeman and Hofma (period unknown). He exposed in The Netherlands (The Hague, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Venlo), France, Germany and the USA (1986, 1990 en 1991).

RKD in Den Haag (

The painting will be well packaged (including frame protection with foam U-profiles) and will be sent by registered mail.
Pick-up in Lisse, The Netherlands is also possible.
