The Dondo-Kamba style is one of the most realistic in Lower Zaire with concentrated expression of the face, a shell like coiffure and a diamond-shaped tattoo adorning the forehead. The style was first defined by Marc Felix in Art & Kongos (1995) http://amzn.to/1SmLtw6
A Nail Fetish is a protective figure used to protect the village for the biggest ones and individuals and families for the smaller. They made bad spirits go away, cure illnesses or infertility, etc.... After the carving is done the diviner activates the statue, by inserting a nail or metal part for each desired action, when not effective anymore they are abandonned .
This Dondo Nkondi figure covered with some tokula powder and nails and blades was probably used by a family to protect the home, and activated by the spiritual forces of the forest.
