Antique Turkmen Saryk Chuval rug circa 1910 in silk and wool good condition.
|Material:||Wool and silk on cotton|
|Condition:||Overall in good condition|
This antique handmade silk and wool Oriental rug belongs to the Saryk tribes of the Oghuz in Turkmenistan region. Measuring 180 x 100cm (5’9”x3’3”) made circa 1910, it has rows of archetypal Guls in rich brown and purple ground enclosed by small Octagon shaped borders. These tribes predominately produced most of the Turkmen rugs in the early 19th century however they gradually lost ground to main Tekke tribes from the mid 19th century. Like other Turkmen tribes, Saryk group have their own emblem known as Gul design. It appears that their vegetable dyed colours used are much brighter than the ones from Tekke tribes, in particular, they use silk and more cotton in the foundation than any other tribal groups. They normally produced only small size rugs called Chuval mainly for their own lifestyle use such as bags, clothing, bedding and wedding gifts amongst others. These vibrant and lively pieces are great to use around the house and can lift up any room needs of colour. This rug is in good overall condition with a minor wear commiserated with age.
