Ethnographically interesting runner with a sleek pattern, from the north of Azerbaijan
|Material:||Wool on wool|
|Condition:||Overall in good condition|
On a camel-coloured background of undyed camel wool, three hexagonal medallions.
Beautiful, calm colour scheme.
The edge features the 'wine glass/saw blade' ornament, Zoroastrian symbolism, fire torch and flame.
Shamdan mashaal. Sham, shami, means torch or candle.
The Zoroastrians worship fire.
Flower-like figures in the hexagonal medallions; these are not plants but a very stylised image of the Firebird.
Simorgh, a large mythical bird that fights with the snake or dragon.
An ancient symbol, also found in China.
This fight was/is seen as an endeavour for cosmic balance.
The last photo very clearly shows the dragon and bird scheme.
In good condition, uniformly worn, the edges are undamaged, no holes or tears.
