Camel wool! around 1900, antique rug from Beluch nomads.
|Material:||Wool on wool|
|Condition:||Overall in good condition|
Antique rug around 1900-1910.
A tree of life on a field of undyed camel wool.
Beluch nomads are known for their tight simple rugs made with few available colours.
The wool was dyed with the dyes extracted from the plants in their environment.
Only a few plants were obtainable, crab lacquer for red, the natural colour of camel wool, a bit of blue and black.
It is that simplicity, which gives it power.
No curved lines, everything straight and sleek and geometrical.
The severity of their faith is reflected in these rugs.
The edge is now red-brown, it used to be redder.
The colour has faded somewhat over 100 years.
The warp threads are made of white wool, which is slightly discoloured by the red.
