Heel of the Vaca Muerta meteorite, 93 g.
Find from 1861 in the Atacama desert in Chile.
Classification: Mesosiderite - A1
The mesosiderites are a rare class of iron/stone meteorites consisting of almost equal parts of nickel-iron and silicate.
The silicate part contains olivine, pyroxene and feldspar that is rich in Ca and is similar in composition to eucrites and diogenites.
At Vaca Muerta in the Atacama desert in Chile, many fragments were found in a large covered field.
They have first been discovered in the 19th century by ore prospectors who took the shiny metal inclusions for silver and thought they had found an outcrop of a deposit of silver ore.
Later, when an analysis has been performed and the nickel-iron has been found, the true nature of meteorite has been established.
