Magnificent work from 1949 by Otto van Rees in his typical style.

Provenance: private collection.

In very good, original condition (without crackle).

Irène Lesparre, secretary of the Van Rees Foundation gave this work the identity number 1699.

Interesting is that this work shows strong similarity with another work by Otto van Rees, namely ‘Stilleven met Torso’. On the verso the text ‘Meisjesportret from the collection of Simonis and Buunk’ (see last photo). Despite that the work isn’t dated, it is known that it was made in 1949 as it has has an almost identical composition as ‘Torso en huis’ which Van Rees did date: 1949.  This likely concerns mother and daughter, or sisters with a significant age difference.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Otto van Rees was often in the company of art circles with the international modernists (fauvism, cubism, dadaism) and collaborated with avant-guards as Jan Toorop, Kees van Dongen and Jean Arp. He left for Paris when he was twenty in 1904 and rented a space in the illustrious studio building Bateau-Lavoir, where he got to know Braque and Picasso. The influence of French cubism becomes visible in the abstract styling of his paintings and experimental collages around 1910. Van Rees focussed increasingly on painting portraits and French landscapes in a more figurative and dreamy style as of 1920 (source: Simonis and Buunk).
