Portrait of the author on the frontispiece and of Montezuma on page 246 engraved by sister Isabella Piccini, the 5 plates that precede the 5 books engraved by Alessandro Dalla Via, browning and foxing on some pages, rare water stains, restored on the title page and on some pages, full parchment hardcover binding. Overall in good condition (see photos).
Second Edition, after the Florentine one of 1699, of the Italian translation of this classic tale of Mexico, describing the three years between the arrival of Cortes at the head of the forces of invasion and the fall of Mexico, composed in 1667 and published in Madrid in 1684.
Work of great fortune, until 1800 it had more than 80 editions and was translated into all major European languages.
The author, secretary of Philip IV, was considered the "cronista mayor de Indias".
