Book with the complete set of 55 prints from the series "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) (postcard format reproductions) - Japan - 1906
First print between 1833 and 1834. The book comprises 55 prints reprinted in 1906 in postcard size, they are not woodblock prints.
The imperial Tokaido route connected Tokyo (Edo) with Kyoto and was the most important trade road in the Japan of the Edo period. Along this route were 53 different "stations", which offered stables for the horses, food and shelter for the travellers. Hiroshige created the series after his travels along the Tokaido route in 1832.
The book comprises 55 cards in total, one for each station, plus one for the departure and the arrival point, each station comes with a postcard size print and a description card with the name of each station.
The description card of the 36th station, Fukuroi - An outdoor tea stall - is missing, not the card of the station.
All cards are removable
