Offering a fine example of a set of early (1790-1850) type II Morphy Barleycorn chess set,with broad simple turned ringed features on the royal pieces.
The type II Morphy Barleycorn chess pieces are all mounted on top smooth baluster stems with simple circular bases.
The chessmen are fabricated from natural and red-stained bone/ivory.
This set is identical to the chess pieces shown in the adjacent image on a chess table with Paul Morphy.
On the frontish piece of Philip Sergeant's Morphy's games of chess book.
The set was probably produced in Nurenberg,Germany between 1790-1850.
The Barleycorn type II chess sets probably first appeared toward the end of the 18th Century.
The popular Barleycorn design sufferd from instability and fragility and the size of royal pieces often obscured the view of the other chessmen during play. (Needless to say,these sets were not conducive to blitz chess)
Barleycorn chess sets were in common use trough the first have of the 19th Century. Despite its early popularity,the design was replaced by the now standard Staunton type chessmen,first offered in September of 1849.The chess set comes with a wooden box with the German text; schach on the lid.
Condition; In good,used condition the chess pieces has some wear,little chips,all wear is age&use related,white queen and king; the ball ornament on top is restored and 1 red pion is not original,see last two photos. On the last photo u can see a white original pion and the red 'not original' pion.
A complete set of checkers/draughts in natural ivory and red stianed ivory.
The individual checker mesure; 3 cm in diameter by 1 cm thick.
These English made draughts date around 1870.
The chess set comes with a wooden box with the German text; schach on the lid.
Condition; The ivory game pieces are in used condition,some draughts have a crack in the side because of the age and working of the material (ivory).
This lot comes with a complete wooden box with domino stones made of bone and ebony wood,also included a wooden gaming board box.
These two boxes are in good,used condition,see photos.
The provider ensures that this item is antique ivory,made before 1947 and there fore permitted under CITES- regulations. These items comes with a certificate of authenticity wich is written by a certified appraiser.
