Paul Strand was the son of impoverished immigrants from Bohemia. At the age of twelve, he was given a camera; at the age of fourteen he apprenticed to the famous photographer Lewis Hine, who is regarded as one of the founders of modern reportage journalism. Strand experimented with abstract photography from an early age, especially of cityscapes, factories and buildings. He is often associated with the hard-edged style of Precisionism. He considered photography as a tool to help accomplish social changes. He always tried “to capture the truth”, as he used to say.
