The vulgar tongue. A glossary of Slang, Cant, and Fash Words and Phrases, used in London from 1839 to 1859; Flash songs, Essays on Slang, and A Bibliography of Canting and Slang Literature.
By DUCANGE ANGLICUS.
Second Edition, improved and much enlarged. Only 250 copies printed.
In above average condition for it's age. The cover is slightly darkened from age and has a split appearing on the spine which can be seen on the outside front. Worn at top and bottom of the spine. Still holding together well but needs good keeping. A few spots (foxing) on the first two pages and last four.
It is a hilarious read with accompanying essays on Slang and some bawdy song lyrics.

* This edition not only combines two separate glossaries from the first edition, but adds many words and phrases. It also has a useful bibliography, four pages long. Particularly enjoyable are the 'translations' from slang to standard English. The former are utterly opaque and foreign to modern readers, and probably to the educated classes of the day.
