With full plate border and tread margins on laid paper.
Strong impression, good condition. At the backside of the sheet in the corners remains of former tipping on an album sheet.
The rulers of gods people. Salomon in centre on his trone.
At left a two faced head, the old face looking backwards to the old times, the female looking to the future, on their head the ark of Noah
This is an etching by Romeyn de Hooghe published in 'Hieroglyphica of merkbeelden der oude volkeren' (Amsterdam: Joris van der Woude, 1735). It is a good example of his genius etching technique
Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708)
Painter, sculptor, medal maker, goldsmith, etcher, and publisher. Born in Amsterdam, a nephew of the painter Pieter de Hoogh. In 1668 in Paris, from 1687 in Haarlem. Opened drawing school in 1688. Propagandist for William of Orange. He was a important renewer of pictural art revolting against the dull French style of his period.
