Roland Monteyne was born in 1932 in Lauwe. He studied Classics and earned a master's degree in Oriental languages and History at the University of Leuven. In 1947, he made his first work in oil paint after which he evolved from the Flemish expressionism to surrealism. Later, he made black and white drawings, and in 1965 he made his first bronze sculpture. His images are half abstract sculptures, often stylised bodies without heads. In 1970, he founded a bronze foundry (lost-wax) in the Sashuis of Herdersem where he remained active until his death in 1993. Roland Monteyne felt especially a poet, who made use of sculpture to express himself.
