Kuyu sculpture from the centre-east of the D.R of Congo.
The Kuyu form two totemic clans: the clan of the Panther in the West and the one of the Snake in the East.
This denomination is allocated by a secret society (ottoté), which designated the chief, in reference to the founding ancestor, related to one of the sacred animals.
The potbellied body is covered with an important network of deep scarifications, alternating the ritual colours.
There are also ancestral masculine figurines with many faces turned towards the occult powers of life.
Ref: Fleuve Congo of François Neyt.
Polychrome figurine of 72 cm, weight 5,840 kilograms.
