Mamluk sabre for officers, Dutch model, circa 1850.
Entirely mounted in iron.
The handle consists of two pieces of ivory, the blade is etched and has a beak point.
Swords of this type were very popular among officers in the period 1830-1860.
That popularity coincided with orientalism; the shape of these sabres is directly derived from the weapons with which the Mamluks went to battle against Napoleon during his Egyptian expedition.
Total length 91 cm, width blade 30 mm.
