Mamluk sabre for officers, Dutch model, circa 1850. Entirely mounted in iron. The handle consists of two pieces of ivory, the blade is etched and has a beak point. Swords of this type were very popular among officers in the period 1830-1860. That popularity coincided with orientalism; the shape of these sabres is directly derived from the weapons with which the Mamluks went to battle against Napoleon during his Egyptian expedition.
