François-Étienne Musin (Belgian, 1820-1888) was born in Ostende. He was a pupil of François Bossuet and enjoyed great success during his lifetime. Between 1840 and 1888, he participated in numerous exhibitions in Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Liverpool and Dublin, as well as in America. He was a productive artist who tended to favour dramatic maritime incidents, but occasionally would paint a calm view, especially on his native Belgian coast.

Musin received many awards and honours, and was a Chevalier of the order of Leopold, of Charles III, and of the Liberator of Venezuela. His son August Henri was born in 1852 in Ostende and he also has a successful artistic career, but never achieved the fame of his father.

Musin died from this disease at the age of 68 in Brussels. His paintings are represented in many public collections around the world, including in Ostende, Brussels, Antwerp, Nice, Montreal, London and Bristol.

Condition: fairly good. The panel is slightly bent and has a crack in the wood that can only be seen on the back.

The painting is framed in an ornamented frame where the corners are detailed and that has a gilded finish.

  • We won multiple lots and they did a combined shipping saving us money (even though they were not required to do so). In addition, the paintings arrived quickly and were well packed.
    Great seller!
