This octant is used properly on sea and has the shape of its wooden predecessors.  It has a frame of bronze that has been left blank at the front and at the rear is black painted. The index arm, seeker holder, mirror houses and filter holders are made of brass, like the vernier with fine tuning.
The scale is made of inlaid bone and runs from – 5 to 110 degrees, but is actually measurable from 0 up to 105 degrees.  The scale and vernier are visibly manually engraved. The left side of the scale is by oxidation less readable. 
The mirrors are whole and well clear. There are four filters for the index mirror in shades of green and brown. The third mirror has a small crack. The horizon filters are green, red and brown.  At the octant is a rear viewfinder. A second viewfinder fits, but is not original part of this sextant.  There is a correct adjustment key and a – not original – filter.
The handle is sturdy and made of dark hard wood, possibly wenge.
The box is original for the time. There are two hooks and a lock. There is no key. The chest has no handle. This was typical of early chests. The chest is of mahogany hardwood and in a tapered shape. The bottom is pretty worn out and the inside contains a restoration. On the top, right-hand corner is a triangular piece of ca. 1.5 cm disappeared and the wood is somewhat loose. I have added a piece of mahogany wood for own restoration. Inside are the remains of blue flannel. 
On the inside three trade labels are stuck. The two lower ones are not legible. The top one is possible by Frances M. Moore, 114 High street Belfast. Moore was a sextant maker (editor) and manufacturer and trader of nautical equipment and watches. He had shops in Belfast and Dublin.  In short a good and old octant, in a contemporary chest.
