A set of 3 Hazi Nuwu figures in a special construction with the typical design of the Batu islands, so without arms. In original version with old patina. The tribal artwork is 49 cm high and 28 cm wide, weight 1.7 kg In the left figure misses its right foot.
Ancestor figure of the Batu Islands. (West of Sumatra, South of Nias). For centuries there have been cultural exchanges with Nias. Therefore the Batu ancestor figures look very much as the ones of the Nias, but the Batu ones are often without arms. On Nias they are called Ädu Nuwu ", on the Batu Islands" Hazi Nuwu ". These figures are the home of the soul of an ancestor, as connection between the world of the living and of the gods.
This figure has probably been brought by Dutch or German missionaries of the Lutheran Church that was active in this area from 1865 to middle of the last century.
