Often, masks as this one were worn by adult men who danced on stilts or their feet as entertainment during festivals, holidays or special events. Stilt dancing occurs primarily within Southern Tanzania, and through-out Northern Mozambique.
Such caricatures and satirical performances have always been a part of the centuries old Nyau Theater and current “Gule Wa Kulu” masquerading. Reference Martin Banham’s book titled A HISTORY OF Theatre in Africa, published by Cambridge University. ( text from two-timing ).
