Kashan Mohtashem extra fine rug, 1870, very unusual, rare, in good condition
|Material:||Wool on cotton|
|Condition:||Overall in good condition|
Kashan Mohtashem rug made of the highest quality kurk wool, made in the 19th century. The intensity of the dark blue plant dyes, the stylised tulip pattern at the edge and the elongated roundel are characteristics which are often found, but which are not deciding factors. Mohtashem carpets often feature a rather crude design; I must point out the incredibly fine and compact knotting, which results in a soft yet sturdy and substantial carpet. This specimen was produced in the workshop of the Master Weaver Mohtashem. His workshop was established in 1840 in the city of Kashan, where these carpets come from.
The rug is almost in good condition, but the wool pile's thickness varies, see photos.
