Petrus Anthonius (Peter) van den Braken (Eindhoven, September 25, 1896 - Eindhoven, January 11, 1979) was a Dutch figurative painter from North Brabant, who worked as a painter, pastelist, watercolourist, and medallist. He is best known for his landscapes, which he "very passionately and forcefully captured on canvas."
Van den Braken was born in 1896 in Eindhoven, as the son of Poulus Catharina (Pauw) van den Braken (1868-1963) and Maria Elisabeth Cecilia van Bakel (1894-1980). He was childhood friends with Antoon Coolen, who would later become known as a novelist. Van den Braken was an admirer of Vincent van Gogh. In the painting village of Heeze, he was taught by painter Jan Kruysen and came into contact with his son, Anton Kruysen. Many of the painting techniques he used were self-taught.
Van den Braken has lived in many places and also travelled extensively. At the age of 12, he decided to leave Brabant to travel around the world with his painting supplies. In his younger years, he worked in Eindhoven, Brussels, Kortenhoef, Paris, London and Rome. Later in life, he worked for some time in North America in Montreal and Toronto in Canada, Palm Beach in Florida, and in Mexico City. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he worked in Amsterdam, the Hague, and Eindhoven and finally ended up in Sterksel.
He mainly painted landscapes (village scenes, cityscapes and harbour views) and still lifes, based on his memory and sketches. He has also made many paintings that depicted the authentic landscapes of North Brabant during his stays abroad.
The “Peter van den Brakencentrum” in Sterksel was named after him, where his works and those of his contemporaries are exhibited. (Source: Wikipedia)
