This rare wooden face mask of the Bamana (Bambara) people has a beautiful old and crusted patina and was used within the society for initiation of boys.
Koré initiation, a rite of passage, insures the development of male indentity.
It has blind eyes. The wearer looks through 5 holes under the carved eyes.
It has big ears, a long fat nose and the mouth is very protruding.

Provenance; a private French collection. There is a collection number marked inside in white ink.
