Fokko Mees - Onweer - 1921 - woodcut 14x24 cm. Printed on thin Japanese paper with page size of 22x30cm.
The bottom right corner is signed in pencil and ''1921'' and in the bottom left corner "Onweer" with the issue listed 1/25.
All in the handwriting of the artist whose estate the page originally came from. The woodcut is in perfect condition. It is
free-mounted on a back sheet of acid-free thin cardboard, which holds an acid-free mat across it.

At this is a highly expressionist print, both in the theme - the animal life, particularly the state of mind of horses during a storm - as well as in the style. Clearly showing the influence of the great German expressionist Franz Marc. He devoted himself to animal portraits in which he is not so much concerned with conceiving the external appearance, but rather the inner essence of the animal. Marc died in 1916 on one of the battlefields of the Western Front, 36 years old.

Fokko Alting Mees (Batavia Dutch Indies 1887 – 1968 Aix-les-Bains France) was a Dutch graphic artist, illustrator, draftsman, woodcarver, etcher, and book band designer. Mees was born the son of banker Regnerus Tjaarda Mees and Constance Theodora Gerhardine van Zijll de Jong. Fokko learned the trade from Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig and Toon de Jong and at the Royal Academy of fine art in the Hague. He lived and worked in Laren, Amsterdam, the Hague, Paris and from 1939 in Nice. He was a member of The Hague Pulchri Studio. Fokko Mees was a specialist in free graphics, but also of book illustrations, opportune charts, ex libris and stamps. He has never had to live off his work and his early expessionistic woodcuts - like this “Onweer” - are therefore quite rare.
