Finely crafted - good condition - 42 cm

The statue represents the noble Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars (1620 - Lyon, 12 September 1642), son of Marshal of France Antoine Coëffier de Ruzé , Marquis of Effiat (1581 - 1632), a close friend of Cardinal Richelieu.

Signed ‘A Leulié elève (student) de M. Dantan aîné’, artist Charles Achille Leulié (1826-?), and E. Quesnel (founder)
First half 1800s.

A brief history of Cinq-Mars

In 1639 Richelieu presented Cinq-Mars to Louis XIII in hopes that he might become a favourite. Cinq-Mars soon became Grand Master of the King's wardrobe and then first Grand Squire of France and Louis XIII gave him the title of count of Dammartin. After distinguishing himself in the siege of Arras, he aspired to higher military tasks, as well as to the marriage with the Duchess of Mantua, Maria Gonzaga (exiled widow of Frederick II Gonzaga), much higher than his rank.
Richelieu opposed the project, citing the excessive difference of rank and age between the two (Marie was ten years older than Henri), but more probably because of the valid fear that in this way the young man, now patently escaped from his control, and decided to play alone, wanted to consolidate his position at court and take the role of Richelieu. From this point on, the two adversaries aimed in fact to the mutual elimination. In fact Cinq-Mars agreed with François Auguste de Thou and with the King's brother Gaston (who aimed to overthrow the King and take over his place) for plotting with the pro-Spanish party.
The plot (which perhaps also took part in the King's wife) foresaw the expulsion or killing of Richelieu, and the signing of a peace treaty between France and Spain, with the renunciation of all conquered territories so far. On 13th March 1642 the conspirators signed under their own name, in Madrid, a peace treaty in this sense, without having notified the King. So the Spaniards massed an army of 18,000 men in the area of Sedan, ready to intervene militarily in support of the conspirators.
A secret courier of the Marquis was intercepted by police of Richelieu and the latter discovered the plot. Betrayed by the Marquis, both Richelieu and Louis XIII decided to punish with death the traitor: imprisoned in the state prison of the Château of Pierre-Scize, Cinq-Mars and Thou were beheaded in Lyon. The mother of Cinq-Mars was exiled in Touraine, his brother was deprived of the benefits as abbot, and the family castle was razed to “a level of infamy”. Further consequence of the failed conspiracy was the recording in parliament of the declaration stating that the King's brother, Gaston, was deprived of the right to the regency. He was however returned its appanages, in exchange for the denunciation of the names of all his accomplices.

The statue is finely crafted in detail as can be seen from the photos, with details of both the face and the folds of his dress very well-finished

Statue dimensions: cm 18 x 12 cm, height 42 cm, 10 kg approx.
