Jean-Émile Laboureur (1877-1943) exhibits in Paris from 1911 and settles there in 1912. He then uses less etched wood and prefers the aqua-fortis. Its style is similar to Cubism around 1912-1913. His role is considered to be "considerable in the great movement of modern art.” Mobilised in 1914, he still continues to create, he composed three suites of engravings on the theme of war, and draws on his experiences for other later works.
Laboureur experimented the chisel technique for the illustration of L’Appartement des jeunes filles of Roger Allard in 1919. This is the first of a long series of sixty-six illustrated books. He also collaborated on magazines like the Gazette du Bon Ton, La Revue Musicale. In his Parisian studio, Laboureur teaches the art of engraving to students like Marie Laurencin and André Dunoyer de Segonzac.
