From the valorization of the tonal, the artist undertakes a reconstruction of the real that is not merely descriptive, but assumes complex evocative edges and, as always corresponds to the expressive use of colour, also symbolic. Bautista’s work is a work that, however, cannot be dominated by the possibility of extending the stain beyond the structure. With this we want to point out that the artist, despite subjecting his images to a certain degree of independence with faithful transcription, does not drift towards abstraction. His works depict themes that we can read immediately, despite the absence of narrative details and anecdotal nuances. Precisely, this option is the one that enhances his use of colour, because he is wise in the synthesis of the real: dives into the skin of the real to extract the compositional beams that define the movement, situation and setting of the image. And if we talk about colour, it is essential to refer to the instrument that modulates it: light. Bautista knows how to channel the excessive brightness and the hidden gloom logically. From this reflection arises an image where nothing is revealed with an exaggerated sharpness and, on the contrary, nothing is hidden under the pale skin of greyish tones. In the same way, it is the interrelation of light and colour that allows you to construct space in an intuitive way. of contemporary cartography.
José Bautista (Seville, 1955), Doctor in Fine Arts, is a Sevillian painter based in Valencia. In his long career as a painter we should highlight his three exhibitions at the European Parliament Headquarters in Strasbourg (France) and Brussels (Belgium). Worth mentioning are also his exhibitions at the UN headquarters in Vienna, in Valencia’s Palau de la Música and in the Museum of La Rioja in Logroño. He has also exposed his works on a regular basis in different galleries in Seville, Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid. Some of his works are reproduced in Japan, Germany, the USA and Spain.
