In very good overall condition, intact, excellent workmanship
Beautiful Habsburg imperial coat of arms made of Trani marble, entirely worked and carved by hand. It depicts a double-headed eagle with open wings (a symbology taken from the coat of arms and the flag of the Holy Roman Empire). It comes from Austria and was hung on the wall of a long corridor of an important private house. It was part of a wide collection of Habsburg coats of arms. Period: late 19th century.
Unique and excellent workmanship, high care and precision of the details and of the animal anatomy, from the talons to the feathers, etc.
Charming decorations on the sides and acanthus leaf in the lower part. Sublime and flawless projecting crown in the upper part.
The double-headed eagle was adopted as imperial coat of arms for the first time by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, called the Great, and lasted as a coat of arms in the Eastern Roman Empire until the last dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Today, the Greek Orthodox Church uses the double-headed eagle as a heritage of the Byzantines. This coat of arms was later used by the Habsburgs, emperors of Austria and kings of Hungary, and by the Romanovs, czars of all Russia.
The item was made of Trani marble, very precious and coming from Italy. It still has a desirable patina and veins.
