Satsuma pottery (薩摩焼 satsuma-yaki), sometimes referred to as "Satsuma porcelain" [source needed] is a type of Japanese clay ceramic. It originated in the 19th century during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and is still produced to this day.W While the term may be used to describe a broad range of types of ceramics, the best known kind of Satsuma porcelain tableware has a crackled glaze finish, light, of an ivory colour, with elaborate polychrome and gold ornaments. [source needed]
Satsuma porcelain tableware came to be when Prince Shimazu of the reign of Satsuma in south Kyūshū abducted highly qualified Korean potters after the Japanese invasions in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Korea, in order to establish a local pottery industry. After exhibiting at the Paris International Exposition in 1867, it became a popular export into Europe.
