Bearpaw Formation, Late Cretaceous, Approx. 71 MYA, Alberta, Canada
Offered here is a beautiful, large ammolite specimen. The colourful and bright ammolite specimen measures approximately 12.5cm. X 9.5cm at it's largest dimensions and 0.7cm thick at its thickest point.
This is a piece of the negative impression of the whorl of a large Placenticeras ammonite. It is slightly convex in nature as it is the counter-fossil. It still possesses quite a lot of ammolite and the range of colours present is excellent.
The centre section is mainly reds, oranges and golds whereas the outer portion is golds, greens, with flashes of blue and turquoise. There are flashes of reds and oranges throughout though.
It has a very uneven surface which gives the piece a lot of character and amplifies the play of colours as it is moved under the light. This specimen is suitable for display or possibly wire wrapping. It is not a completely polished and stabilized gemstone.
Ammolite is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth. It is found in one small 10 sq. km pocket of southern Alberta, Canada.
