Full brown leather richly decorated in gilt, gilt lettering to upper board, five raised bands to spine, gilt-decorated edges and turn-ins, green silk moiré endpapers with gilt decorations to corners, red and yellow head and tail bands, all edges gilt, numerous line drawings (including frontispiece with tissue guard), title page in red and black, printed on good-quality paper throughout, 306 pages plus prelims, 18.7 x 12.5 cm.

First edition of this late-Victorian evocation of country life, superbly bound by Blunson & Company (with their stamp to the verso of the rear free endpaper).

Henry James Blunson set up Blunson & Company in 1888, initially at 28 Glasshouse Street, off Regent Street, moving to 4 Carnaby Street in 1889 and 3 Bridle Lane, Golden Square in 1893. Blunson clearly had standing as a bookbinder, being patronized by clients such as Henry Sotheran – great-nephew of the founder of the renowned bookselling business of the same name – who chose him to bind a book for personal presentation, in 1894, to the son of the pre-Raphaelite painter Sir John Everett Millais (see George Bayntun’s 2017 catalogue ‘25 Books for Christmas’). Magnificent examples of Blunson’s bindings are also to be found in the collections of the British Library and Loeb Music Library (Harvard University).

In ‘An Old English Home and its Dependencies’, renowned West Country author Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) describes rural life from manor to inn, church and farm to cottage and mill, dealing with a variety of subjects, including gambling, hedges and furniture, with interesting characters and anecdotes thrown in along the way. The numerous line drawings are by Frederick Bligh Bond (1864-1945). Note that the bookbinder has omitted the final chapter (‘Underground Rights’), as well as the publisher’s 40-page catalogue, in rebinding the book.

Baring-Gould was an Anglican priest, antiquarian, novelist, folk-song collector and scholar, remembered particularly as a writer of hymns. His folkloric studies resulted among others in ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy. Bligh Bond – a cousin of Baring-Gould – was an architect, illustrator, archaeologist and psychical researcher, closely involved in the early 1900s with the excavations at Glastonbury Abbey (his work there being one of the first documented examples of psychic archaeology).

Contents include:

Paternal Acres, The Manor House, The Domestic Hearth, Old Furniture, Ceilings, The Parish Church, The Village Inn, The Manor Mill, The Farmhouse, The Cottages, The Village Doctor, Scapegraces, Hedges.

Condition:
Binding very well preserved, with just a little rubbing to corners and spine edges, slight bumping to corners, two or three small marks to endpapers. Contents crisp and bright, very clean overall. One small stain, a few pale smudges and tiny marks, two light corner creases, foxing to reverse of endpapers, tissue guard plus first and last two leaves, intermittent foxing elsewhere (mostly light), one page with small piece of stuck paper (pulled from facing page), last leaf with closed tear (repaired by bookbinder), first 200 pages or so with rippling plus very faint water-marking to corners (rest of book virtually unaffected), original ribbon page marker missing (just the stub remaining), binding stretched between endpapers and text block. Top of page block with dulling, slight scratching to gilt (other edges bright), fading/discoloration to headband. Binding tight, with slight lean.
