Two engravings of the centre of Amsterdam: 17th century copper engraving with a view of the Singelgracht/Raampoort and Westerkerk and 19th century steel engraving with a view on the Singel
1. Raem Poort (1663)
Size: image 19.2 x 29.7 cm. on a page of 20 x 30.5 cm.
Condition: excellent. Narrow but adequate margins (as published). Hand-coloured. Never folded. Title is in Dutch. The verso is blank.
17th century copper engraving of the Raampoort in Amsterdam, not signed, from the book ´Historische beschryving der stadt Amsterdam... .´ by Olfert Dapper, published in 1663 by Jacob van Meurs. This is the first, original version, with only the Dutch title. Later, the French title would also be added to the plate.
On the image: Singelgracht seen from the west facing towards the Raampoort. To the left is the bridge over the Singelgracht in front of the Raampoort. In the background, to the right, is the Westertoren.
2. Aussicht von Cingel in Amsterdam (1831)
Dimensions: Image 10 x 17.5 cm. on page of 17.5 x 26 cm.
Condition: very good. Just lightly tanned due to age along the edges, otherwise very clean paper with very wide margins. Hand-coloured. Never folded. The verso is blank.
‘Zicht op de Singel 1-11.’ The round Lutheran church, Singel 11, seen from the Haarlemmerschutsluis in southern direction. In the middle is Stromarkt 2-4, left of the Kattegat. Dating scene: between 1826 and 1829. Made by Robert Batty and published by the Bibliografische Institut Hildburghausen from ca 1831.
