Good condition, see description.

This is a beautiful, rare, genuine Japanese antique. From the late 18th Century (1700s), early Edo period, this is a laquered wood and gold gilt, Kokuzou Bosatsu Kannon Bodhisattva. She is housed in a Zushi Box/Butsu-dō, also in laquered and gold gilt wood, with copper fittings.

This is displayed on a seperate, decorative antique/vintage Altar, this is also hand made in wood, with laquer and gold gilt top section. It also has decorative copper fittings. This dates from the 20th century.

In her Zushi she sits on a multi tiered, lotus throne. Behind her an elaborate floral, wave like, manora, embossed with her Halo or Gotsu, symbolising her radiant aura, is gilded also with gold leaf. She wears a high golden crown, also delightfully gilded.

In her hands she holds a 'Hoju' 宝珠 or hōju-no-tama 宝珠の玉. This sacred Buddhist jewel signifies the bestowal of blessings on all who suffer. It's said it grants wishes, pacifies desires, and brings clear understanding of the Dharma (Buddhist law). This equates to “wealth” in  Buddhist philosophy. She is believed to be a Bodhisattva that will bestow wisdom.

Part of an old family shrine, from a old rural house clearance sell, imported directly from Japan by me.

A wonderful set for the collector, altar, gift, or an impressive interior design statement.

Statue: Good. Patina, wear, small scratches, fading, dust. Loss of gold gilt and laquer, all usual for age/wear. Small old repairs to manora, and Zushi. Missing laquer and gilt on the Zushi has been filled in, in places with paint or age.

Altar: Good. Patina, wear, small scratches, chipping, fading, dust. Loss of gold gilt and laquer, all usual for age/wear. Small old repairs to back and upper sections. Possibly part of a larger altar piece originally. Copper fittings have wear.

Zushi: Late 18th Century ( 1700's). Early Edo period. Japan.
Altar: 20th Century. Japan

  • Hello, I bought a pair of ear ring and also one statue of jeweled Tara. I am deeply disappointed. The pair of ear ring described as coral is not Corail. And the the statue is not old, it’s faked!!!!

Hello. Sorry to hear you are disapointed. However I dont understand. I didnt sell you any earrings. Thats not an item i sell.

The Tara is listed as late 20th century/ early 21st which is accurate. Its not listed as old or antique. Kind regards Bodhisattva Emporium.
