Bearpaw Formation, Late Cretaceous, Approx. 71 MYA, Alberta, Canada

Offered here is a beautiful, large ammolite specimen that has been carved, shaped and polished to resemble a turtle. It is a one-of-a-kind sculpture made from all natural materials. The colourful ammolite specimen (carapace or shell) measures approximately 30cm. X 24cm while the whole piece measures approximately 41cm X 24cm. at it's largest dimensions and 4cm thick at its thickest point.

The piece weighs 1688g in total.

The turtle "shell" or carapace is made from one single piece of ammolite from a Placenticeras costatum ammonite and is not a mosiac. The artist cleaned away the excess matrix on the fossil in a strategic manner to make the sculpture. The ammolite piece its self is a wonderful and bright example of how good ammolite from this region can get. It boasts bright purples, blues and greens as well as having highlights of golds, oranges and a touch of red. It is a beautiful piece of ammolite.

The head is made from a single chamber of an ammonite that was compromised while being buried and filled up with sediment coming to a natural point. The artist has added two round pieces of ammolite to represent eyes on the side of its "head".

The legs are made from Baculite pieces found in Alberta as well. The baculite pieces are between 2cm and 2.5cm. depending on the thickness of the carapace in that area.

It is an amazing piece and the artist has added a "nail hole" for hanging.

This piece was prepared by Alberta artisan and ammolite technician Dave Straat.

Great specimen!! Good packaging and sending. Just 1 thing: there is a misspelling on the certificate. In the small letters it says canda fossils instead of canada. But the ammolite is very beautifull!
