Portrait of a woman made and signed by Pietro Ghizzardi (Viadana, 20 July 1906–Boretto, 7 December 1986)

Biographical notes:
He is famous as exponent of the Naïve Art, protagonist at the 2015 Expo in Milan in the exhibition curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.

Born in Corte Pavesina, municipality of Viadana, from a peasant family, from an early age he showed passion for painting, first developed as amateur. He moved to Cogozzo in 1930, another area of Viadana, where he started painting on walls of farmhouses, and the following year in Boretto, in the Reggio Emilia area, where he began to held exhibitions and he started his career as a painter. He died in Boretto in 1986.

Artistic activity:
His painting, of naive style, brought him to exhibit in various northern Italy locations. In particular we remember his participation in the exhibition “Mostra nazionale dei naïf Città di Luzzara” in 1968, during which he was awarded a gold medal by the President of the Republic. Since the late 1990s, his works have been exhibited in some contemporary art exhibitions in Italy and abroad: “Banditi dell'arte”, Paris (2012), Borderline. “Artisti tra normalità e follia” “Da Bosch a Dalì, dall'Art Brut a Basquiat”, Ravenna (2013), Homage to Henri Rousseau. “The World of Naive painters and Outsiders”, Tokyo (2013), Fuori Quadro, Bergamo (2013).

Several Italian and foreign museums and collections preserve his artworks: the Museum of Laval (France), the Croatian Museum of naive art in Zagreb, the Museum Charlotte Zander in Bönnigheim (Germany), Galleria d'Arte moderna Ricci Oddi in Piacenza and the Foundation “Un Paese” in Luzzara.

Literary activity:
In 1967, he published for Einaudi the autobiography “Mi richordo anchora”, edited by Gustavo Marchesi and Giovanni Negri with introduction by Cesare Zavattini, premiered ten years later as “Opera narrativa prima” in the Premio Viareggio. From the book “Ariston” he made a disc, in turn used for a theatre show curated by Enzo Robutti and Gustavo Marchesi.

In 1980 he published “A Lilla. Quattro pietre in immortalate” for the publisher All'Insegna del Pesce d'Oro.

In 1986 Giovanni Negri edited the printing of the unpublished works “Giugliètta e romeo” and “Il bambino di Viareggio rapito”.

Critique and memory:
In 1965 was made a documentary by Film Luce: “Pietro Ghizzardi. Pittore contadino” directed by Michele Gandin and commented by Leonardo Sinisgalli, while in 1979 Rai 1 produced the documentary “Mi richordo anchora. Conversazione con Pietro Ghizzardi” for the series “Le memorie, gli anni” directed by Gian Vittorio Baldi.

In 1992, in Boretto was founded the Casa Museo Pietro Ghizzardi al Belvedere, which holds works and manuscripts of the artist and an archive. (source Wikipedia)
