Landscape painter Nicholas Bastert was best known for his river faces he made in Breukelen, but also in Maarssen and Nieuwersluis.
Bastert was born into a prominent family. Initially he seemed destined for a career in the trade and worked at the office in the trading company of his father. In the studio of Marinus Heijl he met the young painter Geo Poggenbeek around 1870, with whom he would remain friends for life. In this period he chose for painting and was admitted to the full-time day program of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Bastert won gold medals at exhibitions in Amsterdam, Munich and Paris. He was member of merit of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, and of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
His work is featured in Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Haags Gemeentemuseum in the Hague, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
