Beautiful expressionistic and pastily painted oil on canvas paining called "De Schoorlse duinen" by Matthieu Wiegman, a painter who especially became famous during his Bergen School period. The canvas is in good condition. Would benefit from a professional cleaning.
Mattheus Johannes Maria (Matthieu) Wiegman (Zwolle, May 31, 1886 - Bergen, April 5, 1971) was a Dutch artist. He was a painter, draughtsman, mural painter and stained-glass artist, he is also known for his posters and covers.
Wiegman attended the Ambachtsschool in Alkmaar. He came to Bergen in 1911, when he had completed his study at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1905 until 1909. Together with Leo Gestel and Arnout Colnot, he was one of the most important figures within the Bergen School. He had a lot of admiration for the work of Paul Cézanne.
In 1909, he created the outline of his first religious painting, the preaching of Saint Willibrordus. During his career he created many religious performances. The Bergen painters showed him new opportunities. Wiegman participated to his heart’s content. He mainly focussed on luminist works. He also regularly went to France to work there. He was a member of the Dutch Kunstenaarskring. In 1918, he was asked for a professorship at the Amsterdamse Akedemie at the age of 32.
Gradually, the optimistic element in the work of Wiegman starts to dominate more and more until the last 20 years of his life, in which he uses the brightest and hardest colours, colours that are very unusual. The still lifes inspired by his friend De Zarate were important for the work of Wiegman. Ideally, Wiegman used the objects he was painting as filling in the background.
