¶ The French numismatist Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) established his reputation with this book on the history of coins and medals of the Republic of the Netherlands. He published a second part in 1690, but that appeared mostly separate and only in Dutch editions. The coins and medals illustrated by him, were minted between 1566 and 1680. Many of the engraved illustrations show important moments and people from Dutch history. For example, Bizot describes the famous peat barge (1590) with which the Dutch recovered the city of Breda from the Spaniards, but also the siege of Leiden (1574). In these and other cases, Bizot describes the events with engravings of the medals.
