Gottfried Helnwein (Vienna, 8 October 1948) is an Austrian painter, photographer, set designer and performance artist with Irish origins.

He studied at the University of Visual Arts in Vienna (Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Wien). He was awarded the Master of the Class (Meisterschulpreis) by the University of Visual Arts in Vienna, the Kardinal-Konig Prize and the Theodor-Korner trophy.

His early works consist mainly of realistic hyper-watercolours, depicting injured children, as well as performances often with children in public places. Helnwein is a conceptual artist, who deals mainly with psychology and social anxiety, historical issues and political topics. For this reason, his work is often considered provocative and polemical. He worked as a painter, illustrator, photographer, muralist, sculptor and performance artist, using a wide variety of techniques and media. Helnwein is also known for designing the stages and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions. Among these Staatsoper Hamburg, the Volksbuhne Berlin and the Opera in Los Angeles.

The winner of this auction will receive, for free, the wonderful monograph by the State Museum of St. Petersburg, more than 420 pages, and the CD shown in the photos.
The Museum also houses a substantial part of Helnwein's work.
