Fabre’s entire artistic career, from the early years when he exhibited himself in a shop window, the performances in which he set fire to money of the spectators, to the 23-metre-high outdoor sculpture Totem on the Leuven Ladeuzeplein.
Jan Fabre (Antwerp, 1958) is internationally known as one of the most innovative and versatile artists of his time. Over the past 25 years he has presented himself as a performance artist, theatre maker, choreographer, opera creator, filmmaker, author and visual artist. Whatever he does, he always pushes the limits. All these years his artistic career has remained contested. Homo Faber is the first reference work on all aspects of the visual art of Jan Fabre. The book discusses many powerful ideas and aspects of Fabre’s performance art, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs and films. For example his idea of metamorphosis, his use of human bones, or the resonance between his art with those of old masters like Van Eyck, Rubens and De Braeckeleer.
With contributions of Giacinto di Pietrantonio, Jan Hoet, Luigi Ficacci, Sebastian Hackenschmidt, Stefan Hertmans, Yuko Hasegawa, Bart Verschaffel, Lorend Hegyi, Sylvie Ferré, Emil Hrvatin, Emmanuelle Nizou, Thierry Raspail and Johan Swinnen.
