17 royal portraits by Erwin Olaf
Focus Cahier, volume 1 no. 1; 1990
Thin booklet, stapled, dimensions: 345 × 246 × 3 mm; 24 pp.

Erwin Olaf Springveld (1959), a.k.a. Erwin Olaf, started making his name as a photographer in 1987 when the colour supplement of magazine Vrij Nederland published photos of him, including one from his later famous photo series (and book) ‘Chessmen’. This first issue of Focus Cahier contains 17 portraits of white people made black. And that is the least crazy aspect of the staging. All portraits are bordered with oak leaves and more bombastic symbolism. An old lady dressed up as a fairy, while her huge breasts hang out of her dress; also the Greek theme of the beautiful adonis genre is represented. Above all, the photos exude humour. The introduction, or rather the report of an interview by Theo van Gogh, shows that Olaf has had no deeper intentions. The photos are beautifully printed in duotone.
