The Roman Republic was a sister republic of the 1792 French republic. It included part of the territories of the Papal States occupied by the General Louis-Alexandre Berthier, who invaded Rome taking removing it from the temporal power of Pius VI on the 10 February 1798. It was proclaimed on 15 February 1798.
After the annexation in the following 7th of March (Tiberina Republic and Ancona Republic), the Roman Republic bordered with the Cisalpine Republic and the Tuscany Grand duchy to the north, with the Tyrrhenian Sea at West, with the Kingdom of Naples at South and with the Adriatic Sea at East. Of the two Papal exclaves in the Neapolitan territory, it only remained the territory of Pontecorvo, while the Principality of Benevento remained under dispute.
With this event, the French Revolution put an end to the Papal States and the Holy Roman Empire.
The Republic ended in 1799 and after a few months the Papal States was restored.
